Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) golfers Alison Schweers and Kylie Nichols are tied for 43rd and 54th place respectively following the opening round of the 2019 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCA) Women's National Championship May 14 at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Schweers, a sophomore from Carroll, carded an 87 and Nichols, a sophomore from Ogden, shot a 90 in their opening rounds.
"The girls played well today," DMACC women's golf coach Chris Seaboch said. "A couple of holes snuck up on them but overall it was a good start."
Seaboch pointed out that of the 15 girls from NJCAA Region XI playing in the tournament Schweers and Nichols are sitting in fifth and seventh places respectively.
"We will be very happy if that trend continues or even improves," Seaboch said.
Seminole State College (SSC) shot a 300 on opening day and leads the team competition by nine strokes over Daytona State College (DSC). Worapitcha Anndit of SSC posted a two-under-par 70 in her first round and leads the individual competition by three strokes over teammate Sophia Warren.
The tournament, originally a 72-hole event, was changed to 54 hole format after rain cancelled opening round play on May 13. Players will play their second rounds today and their final 18 holes on May 16.
