DMACC baseball team takes doubleheader from Dakota County

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) baseball team improved to 27-11 for the season after sweeping a doubleheader from Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) April 16 at the DMACC baseball diamond.


The Bears took the opener, 1-0, and won the nightcap, 5-2, to extend their current winning streak to five games.


DMACC was limited to three hits in winning the opener. Sophomores Roman Vega of Buffalo, Minn., and Misael Sanchez of Allentown, Penn., each doubled and sophomore Tavien Gillette of Rock Island, Ill., singled. Gillette drove in the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth.


Sophomore Chris Witzke of Humboldt started on the mound for the Bears and went four innings to earn his second win of the season against one loss. He allowed three hits and struck out six batters. Freshman Keaton Duckett of Johnson pitched an inning and a third, giving up one hit, striking out one batter and walking two. Sophomore Jakob Richardson of Cave Creek, Ariz., went an inning and two-thirds and earned his fourth save of the season. He struck out two of the five batters he faced.


Sophomore Austin Murr of Stillwater, Minn., had a triple and drove in three runs for DMACC in the second game. The Bears led 1-0 after three innings and put four runs on the board in the sixth. DCTC scored its only two runs in the top of the fifth.


Freshman Will Moritz of West Des Moines pitched the first three innings for DMACC, allowing one hit and striking out three batters. Sophomore Sam Laakso of Duluth, Minn., pitched an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one. Freshman Kolton Scherbenske of Rapid City, S.D., went an inning and two-thirds and improved to 1-0 with the win. He struck out two of the five batters he faced.


The DMACC baseball team returns to Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) play with a four-games series against Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) April 19 and 20 at the DMACC baseball diamond. The Bears lead the ICCAC with a 13-3 record. ICCC is 23-14 overall and 11-5 in the conference. Game time is 1 p.m. each day.
