DMACC baseball team sweeps doubleheader from IHCC

A pair of freshmen, Drake Obermueller of Iowa City and Drew Owen of Alleman, carried the bulk of the offense as the DMACC baseball team swept a doubleheader from Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) March 8 at the DMACC baseball team.

 

Obermueller hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in DMACC's 24-6 win in the first game and Owen hit a pair of homers and collected seven RBIs in a 13-2 win in the second game. Owen also hit a pair of doubles and a home run and collected four RBIs in the opener.

 

Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City won the opener and freshman Izaaq Zrust of Ladd, Ill., got the win in the second game.

 

With the wins, the Bears improved to 10-11 for the season. They collected 25 hits in the two games including eight doubles and eight home runs. Both games were called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

 

Obermueller hit a grand slam home run in the first inning of the first game and added a two-run shot in the second inning. DMACC took a 5-1 lead in the first inning and put the game away with three runs in the second, 12 in the third and four in the fourth inning. IHCC, which fell to 10-6 for the season, scored a run in the first, three in the third and two in the fifth.

 

Owen's four hits paced the Bears at the plate. Freshman Nolan Galla of Warrenville, Ill., had three hits and Obermueller and redshirt freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman had two hits apiece. Extra-base hits in addition to Owen's two doubles and home run and Obermueller's two home runs included two doubles from Foster and one each from Galla and freshman Grayson Kirsch of Marion. DMACC got a home run from sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., and Foster, Leininger, Kirsch and freshman Jacob Luster of Huxley drove in two runs apiece.

 

Cook improved to 1-1 with the win. He went four innings, allowing four runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Vincent Clawson of Rhodes went one inning and allowed two runs on two hits.

 

Owen hit a pair of three-run home runs, one in the second inning and the other in the third inning in DMACC's win in the second game. His three hits paced the Bears at the plate and sophomore Austin Anderson of Marion added a pair of singles.

 

IHCC took a 2-0 lead in the first and DMACC answered with six runs in the bottom of the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.

 

Extra-base hits included doubles from Obermueller and Foster and Leininger and sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale joined Owens in home runs with one apiece. Foster drove in a pair of runs for the Bears.

 

Zrust improved to 3-0 with the win. He went three and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Ben Engele of Oakdale, Mont., pitched one inning, allowing two hits and striking out two batters and redshirt freshman Teeghen Rath of Cedar Falls went two-thirds of an inning, striking out one of the two batters he faced.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Dakota County Technical College (DCTC) in a doubleheader March 10 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
