DMACC baseball team sweeps three-game series from NIACC

 

The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 22-17 overall and 10-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after sweeping a three-game series against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) April 10 and 12 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

 

Sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale drove in four runs as the Bears came away with a 16-4 decision in a single game on April 10 and sophomore Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., scattered six hits in a 17-4 win in the first game of a doubleheader on April 12. A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth inning from sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., gave DMACC a 11-10 win in the second game.

 

The Bears' three wins featured 44 runs on 36 hits, including 11 doubles, a triple and three home runs.

 

The losses dropped NIACC to 6-30 overall and 3-10 in the ICCAC.

 

DMACC overcame a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the first, two in the third, eight in the fifth and four in the sixth in winning the single game on April 10. NIACC scored two runs in the top of the first and one each in the fourth and fifth innings.

 

Moore led the Bears with four hits, including a double, and freshman Drew Owen of Alleman and sophomore Trey Franck of Marion each had three hits, including two doubles apiece. DMACC also got a double from Leininger.

 

Leininger, Owen, Franck and sophomore Cole Baumgart of Clarinda drove in two runs apiece.

 

Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City ran his record to 3-2 with the win. He pitched all seven innings, allowing four runs on two hits with four strikeouts.

 

DMACC never trailed in winning the first game on April 12. The Bears scored three runs in the first, seven in the second, two in the third and five in the fourth. The game was called because of the run rule after NIACC batted in the top of the fifth. The Trojans scored two runs in the third and two in the fourth.

 

Owen's three hits, a pair of doubles and a home run, paced the Bears at the plate. Franck, Baumgart and freshman Maverick DeVeau of Kendallville, Ind., had two hits apiece. DeVeau, Baumgart and redshirt freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman joined Owen with one double apiece.

 

Franck and DeVeau each drove in three runs and Owen had two RBIs.

 

Miller improved to 3-3 with the win. In addition to allowing six hits, he struck out nine and walked one.

 

DMACC used a six-run first inning and one run each in the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth innings in winning the final game of the series. NIACC scored two runs in the third, one in the sixth, two in the seventh and five in the eighth, gaining a 10-10.

 

Freshman Nolan Galla of Warrenville, Ill., began DMACC's game-winning rally with a base on balls. He took second on an infield grounder from Foster and advanced to third on a throwing error. Leininger then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Galla with the winning run.

 

Moore led the Bears offensively with three hits, including two home runs, and drove in five runs.  Owen had a pair of singles, and Franck added a triple.

 

Freshman Ben Hites of Oak Creek, Wis., started on the mound for DMACC, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk in six innings. Sophomore Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., went one inning, allowing two runs on one hit with one strikeout and redshirt freshman Jackson Gwin of Lafayette, Ind., allowed three runs on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Sophomore Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went an inning and a third and came away with his third win against two losses. He allowed two runs on two hits and struck out three batters.

The DMACC baseball team puts its nine-game winning streak on the line April 15 when the Bears face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENCC) in a doubleheader at Norfolk, Neb. The Hawks are 25-17 overall and 8-5 in the ICCAC. Their losses included a 3-2 decision to DMACC March 25 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
