SECC sweeps three-game series from DMACC baseball team

The DMACC baseball team fell to 24-20 overall and 12-6 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after dropping a three-game series to Southeastern Community College (SECC) April 18 and 19 at West Burlington.

 

SECC, ranked third in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) won a 20-2 decision in the only game played on April 18, sending DMACC's 11-game winning streak. The Blackhawks were victories in both games of a doubleheader on April 19, 6-5 and 8-4. They lead the ICCAC at 17-1 and are 36-9 overall.

 

DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the game played on April 18 but SECC responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning, then scored four runs in the fourth and 13 in the fifth to come away with the win. The Bears tallied their other run in the top of the sixth.

 

Redshirt freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman and sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale accounted for four of DMACC's six hits with each getting a pair of singles. Sophomore Austin Andersen of Marion doubled for the Bears' only extra-base hit and freshman Drew Owen of Alleman and sophomore Brady Walton of Waukee drove in the DMACC runs.

 

Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City fell to 3-3 with the loss. He pitched the first four innings, allowing 10 runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Redshirt freshman Jack Sellnau of Anamosa pitched a third of an inning, allowing six runs, five of which were unearned, on one hit and he walked one batter. Freshman Jacob Luster of Huxley went two-thirds of an inning, giving up four runs on three hits with one strikeout and sophomore Braxton Hoard of West Fargo, N.D., walked two batters in one inning on the mound.

 

DMACC had a 5-3 lead after batting in the top of the seventh in the opener on April 19, but SECC rallied for three runs in the bottom of the inning to come away with the win.

 

Freshman Drake Obermueller of Iowa City had three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs to lead the Bears offensively. Sophomore Trey Franck of Marion and Cole Baumgart of Clarinda had two hits apiece and Baumgart drove in two runs and Franck drove in one run.

 

Sophomore Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., pitched the first two innings for the Bears, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. Sophomore Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went four and two-thirds innings and fell to 3-3 with the loss. He allowed four runs, three of which were unearned, on nine hits.

 

SECC broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and two in the eighth in winning the final game of the series. DMACC scored single runs in the third and seventh innings and two in the eighth.

 

Moore led the Bears at the plate with two singles and Obermueller and Franck each doubled. Anderson drove in two of DMACC's four runs and Foster added an RBI.

 

Freshman Ben Hites of Oak Creek, Wis., fell to 3-1 with the loss. He went five innings, allowing three runs on six hits with one walk. Sophomore Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., threw an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs on three hits with one strikeout and freshman Greg Noel of Moorhead, Minn., allowed one run on one hit but was not credited with any innings pitched. Redshirt freshman Jackson Gwin of Lafayette, Ind., pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs on three hits with a strikeout and redshirt freshman Jack Bunnell of Eddyville gave up one hit in a third of an inning on the mound. Freshman Ben Engele of Oakdale, Mont., also pitched a third of an inning and retired the only batter he faced.

 

The DMACC baseball team will face Marshalltown Community College (MCC) in a doubleheader April 22 at the DMACC baseball diamond. MCC is 10-35 overall and 5-13 in conference play.
