DMACC baseball team takes 3-2 decision from Northeast
  • Freshman Drake Obermueller hits for the cycle, including a game-winning home run
  • Obermueller had a hand in two of DMACC's three runs
  • Sophomore Andrew Theiss levels his record at 1-1

Freshman Drake Obermueller of Iowa City pulled off a rare baseball feat as the DMACC baseball team recorded a 3-2 win over Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENCC) March 25 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

Obermueller hit for the Cycle and had a hand in two of the Bears' three runs as they improved to 12-15 overall and 1-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with their first conference game on their home field.

Obermueller's cycle came on a double in the second inning, a triple in the fourth, a single in the fifth and a game-winning home run in the seventh. His triple led to the Bears' first run as he eventually scored on a wild pitch.

DMACC took a 1-0 lead in the third when freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman led off with a single, stole second and scored on single up the middle by freshman Nolan Galla of Warrenville, Ill.

Obermueller's run in the fourth gave the Bears a 2-0 lead and NENCC, which fell to 17-13 and 0-1, closed to within 2-1 with a run in the top of the fifth. The Hawks tied it in the top of the seventh before Obermueller homered over the left field fence in the bottom of the inning. It was his third home run of the season.

Sophomore Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake relieved freshman Grayson Kirsch of Marion with two outs in the top of the seventh and came away with the win to improve to 1-1 for the season. Theiss hit the first batter he faced and that gave the Hawks' a 2-2 tie but he atoned for that mistake by retiring the next seven batters he faced go get the win.

Freshman Izzaq Zrust of Ladd, Ill., started on the mound for the Bears and went four and two-thirds innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Kirsch went two innings, allowing one run on three hits and a pair of walks.

The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) in a three-game series March 28 and 29 at Council Bluffs. The two teams will play a doubleheader on March 28 and a single game on March 29. The Reivers, a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I program, are 22-6 overall and 2-0 in Division I of the ICCAC. They are ranked ninth in the NJCAA Division I poll.
