Sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., belted three home runs and drove in 11 runs as the DMACC baseball team swept both games of a doubleheader against Marshalltown Community College (MCC) April 22 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
Leininger's performance led the Bears to a 38-12 win in the nightcap after they took the opener, 11-9, behind three runs batted in apiece from sophomore Trey Franck of Marion and freshman Maverick DeVeau of Kendallville, Ind.
DMACC banged out 19 extra-base hits, 11 doubles, three triples and five home runs in winning the second game. The Bears got two doubles apiece from freshmen Brayden Foster of Alleman and Drake Obermueller of Iowa City and sophomore Trey Franck of Marion, freshman Drew Owen of Alleman and sophomores Brady Walton of Waukee, Jake Espeland of Des Moines, Austin Andersen of Marion and Cole Baumgart of Clarinda had one double apiece.
Franck and sophomores Brock Moore of Urbandale and Martin Smith of Boone hit triples and Obermueller and Andersen belted one home run apiece.
The Bears trailed 1-0 coming to bat in the bottom of the first and took control of the game with nine runs. They added one run in the second, eight in the third, 16 in the fourth and two each in the fifth and sixth innings.
MCC scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings in addition to its run in the first and added two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Anderson was DMACC's top hitter with six hits in seven at-bats. Leininger and Obermueller had four hits apiece and Owen, Franck and Baumgard collected three hits apiece. Foster, Moore and Smith each had two hits.
Obermueller drove in seven runs, Anderson had six RBIs, Foster came away with four, Smith finished with three and Espeland and Baumgart had two RBIs apiece.
Freshman Izzaq Zrust of Ladd, Ill., pitched the first three and a third innings, allowing nine runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Freshman Ben Engele of Oakdale, Mont., went an inning and two-thirds, striking out two batters and walking one and got the win to level hits record at 1-1. Sophomore Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter pitched an inning and two-thirds, allowing three runs on two hits with three strikeouts and two walks and freshman Vincent Clawson of Rhodes went a third of an inning, giving up one hit, striking out one batter and walking one.
DMACC had to overcome an 8-3 deficit in winning the first game. The Bears led 2-0 after the first inning but fell behind when MCC scored six runs in the second and two in the third. DMACC made it an 8-3 game with a run in the fourth and trailed 8-6 after scoring three runs in the fifth. MCC went up 9-6 game with a run in the top of the sixth and a five-run rally in the bottom of the inning gave the Bears the win.
Franck had two hits, including a home run, to go with his three RBIs and Owen and Baumgart also homered. DeVeau, Owen and Andersen each doubled. Owen and Baumgart joined Franck with two hits apiece and each drove in two runs.
Freshman Grayson Kirsch of Marion pitched the first two and two-thirds innings for DMACC, allowing seven runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., went four and a third innings and improved to 5-2 with the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven batters.
The DMACC baseball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in a three-game series April 25 and 26 at Estherville. The two teams will play a doubleheader on April 25 and a single game on April 26. ILCC, which had its season shortened because of a bus accident Feb. 12 that resulted in the death of one of its players, is 9-20 overall and 6-14 in the ICCAC.
