The DMACC baseball team ran its record to 28-21 overall and 16-7 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after winning two of three games against Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) April 25 and 26 at Estherville.
Sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale homered and drove in three runs and sophomore Blake Crancer of Normal, Ill., also had three RBIs as the Bears came away with a 12-9 decision in the first game of a doubleheader on April 25.
Freshman Drew Owen of Alleman homered and doubled and had six RBIs in a 12-11 loss in the second game and freshman Drake Obermueller of Iowa City and Moore had five and four RBIs respectively in an 18-11 win in the only game on April 26.
DMACC used a three-run rally in the top of the third for a 3-2 lead in the opener on April 25. ILCC, which scored two runs in the second, regained the advantage at 6-3 with four runs in the third. DMACC responded with two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth and led 11-7 after the Lakers got a run in the bottom of the sixth. The Bears added an insurance run in the seventh and ILCC scored twice in the bottom of the inning.
Crancer, Owen, Obermueller, redshirt freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman and freshman Maverick DeVeau of Kendallville, Ind., had two hits apiece. Crancer, Obermueller and Foster hit one double apiece and sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., added a double. Foster joined Moore and Crancer with three RBIs.
Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Alleman pitched the first two and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Sophomore Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake went three and two-thirds innings and improve to 4-3 with the win. He allowed three runs on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Freshman Teeghen Rath of Cedar Falls earned his second save of the season in two-thirds of an inning on the mound. He struck out two batters and walked one.
ILCC scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth and held DMACC scoreless over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings to get the win in the second game. DMACC led 2-1 after the first inning and 4-3 after two innings but the Lakers took a 7-4 lead with four runs in the third. The Bears scored three runs in the fourth to gain a 7-7 tie but ILCC responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 9-7. DMACC then went ahead 11-9 behind four runs in the fifth before the Lakers rallied in the bottom of the sixth.
Owen had a single to go with his home run and a double in driving in six runs. Obermueller hit a pair of doubles and Foster added one.
Freshman Ben Hites of Oak Creek, Wis., pitched the first five innings for DMACC, allowing nine runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Redshirt freshman Jackson Bunnell of Eddyville pitched a third of an inning and suffered the loss in his first decision of the season. He allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and redshirt freshman Jackson Gwin of Lafayette, Ind., worked the final two and two-thirds inning, allowing one hit, striking out five batters and walking one.
Moore and Obermueller belted two home runs apiece and DeVeau and freshman Nolan Galla of Warrenville, Ill., had one apiece in DMACC's win in the only game on April 26. The Bears trailed 1-0 after the first inning but took a 5-1 lead on two runs in the second and three in the third. ILCC answered with five runs in the bottom of the third and then fell behind 7-6 when DMACC scored twice in the fifth. ILCC's run in the bottom of the fifth tied the game at 7-7 before the Bears pulled away with five runs in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. ILCC scored one run in each of the seventh and eighth innings and added two runs in the ninth.
Foster's four hits paced DMACC at the plate. Obermueller, DeVeau and Galla had three this apiece and Moore and Leininger each had two hits. Obermueller's five RBIs led the Bears with Moore, Galla and DeVeau getting four, three and two RBIs respectively.
Sophomore Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., pitched the first four innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., improved to 5-2 with the win. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and two walks and Gwin went a third of an inning, retiring the only batter he faced. Freshman Ben Engele of Oakdale, Mont., pitched one inning, allowing one run on three hits and freshman Greg Noel of Moorhead, Minn., went one inning, allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The DMACC baseball team will face Marshalltown Community College (MCC) in a single game April 29 at Marshalltown. The Bears swept a doubleheader from the Tigers April 22 at the DMACC baseball diamond, winning by scores of 11-9 and 28-12. MCC is 11-39 overall and 6-17 in the ICCAC.
