The DMACC baseball team closed the regular season at 30-23 overall and 18-9 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after losing two of three games against Kirkwood Community College (KCC) May 1 and 2 at the DMACC baseball diamond.
The two teams split a doubleheader on May 1 with the Bears winning the opener, 4-1, and KCC taking the nightcap, 12-7. The Eagles won a single game on May 2, 13-7.
DMACC scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third in winning the first game on May 1. Freshman Drew Owen of Alleman accounted for two of the Bears' five hits with a triple and a single and he drove in one DMACC run.
Freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City pitched the first four innings and improved to 4-3 with the win. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out eight and walked one. Freshman Izzaq Zrust of Ladd, Ill., worked an inning and a third, allowing one hit and striking out three batters and redshirt freshman Jackson Gwin of Lafayette, Ind., allowed one hit and struck out two batters in two-thirds of an inning. Freshman Teeghen Rath of Cedar Falls picked up his third save of the season in one inning on the mound. He allowed one hit and struck out one batter.
KCC used a two-run rally in the first and a five-run rally in the second in winning the second game. DMACC made it a 5-3 game with three runs in the bottom of the second but the Eagles pulled away behind a pair of runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. DMACC closed to within five at 10-5 with two runs in the seventh and both teams scored a pair of runs in the ninth.
Freshman Brayden Foster of Alleman and sophomore Austin Andersen of Marion led the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a double by Andersen. Sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D. and freshman Maverick DeVeau of Kendallville, Ind., had one hit and two runs batted in apiece.
Freshman Ben Hites of Oak Creek, Wis., pitched the first inning and two-thirds and fell to 3-2 with the loss. He allowed six runs on five hits and walked two batters. Freshman Ben Engele of Oakdale, Mont., allowed one run on one hit and walked two batters and was not credited with any innings pitched and redshirt freshman Jack Sellnau of Anamosa allowed two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk in an inning and two-thirds. Sophomore Sebastian Talaga of Palo Hills, Ill., went two-thirds of an inning, allowing one run with two strikeouts and two walks and sophomore Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter gave up three hits in three innings on the mound. Freshman Greg Noel of Moorhead, Minn., threw an inning and two-thirds, allowing two runs with two strikeouts and a walk and freshman Jacob Luster of Huxley pitched a third of an inning and walked one batter.
KCC overcame a 6-3 deficit with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and seven in the ninth in winning the single game on May 2. DMACC trailed 2-0 after the second inning and 3-0 after KCC batted in the third but fought back with three runs in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fourth for its 6-3 lead. The Bears added their final run in the bottom of the ninth.
Foster, Owen, sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale and freshman Drake Obermueller of Iowa City led DMACC offensively with two hits apiece, including doubles by Owen, Moore and Obermueller. Sophomore Trey Franck of Marion also doubled for the Bears and Foster hit a home run. Foster, Moore and Obermueller had two RBIs apiece.
Sophomore Andrew Theiss of Clear Lake started on the mound for DMACC and pitched three innings, allowing three runs on two hits with six strikeouts and a walk. Gwin wen t two innings and gave up one run on one hit with two strikeouts and a walk and sophomore Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., threw two-thirds of an inning, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Zrust went an inning and two-thirds and struck out one batter and Rath pitched two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks and fell to 1-2 with the loss. Freshman Grayson Kirsch of Marion allowed two runs on two hits and walked one batter but was not credited with any innings pitched and redshirt freshman Jack Bunnell of Eddyville gave up three runs on one hit and two walks in a third of an inning. Sophomore Jordan Leininger of Fargo, N.D., pitched two-thirds of an inning and retired the only two batters he faced.
The DMACC baseball team will be the No. 4 seed in the 2026 Region 11 Division II Baseball Championship May 7 to 10 at Carroll. The Bears will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENCC) in their tournament opener May 7 at noon. DMACC had the better of it in its regular season series with the Hawks, winning all three games.
The DMACC-NENCC winner will face the tournament's No. 1 seed, Southeastern Community College (SECC), at 3:30 p.m. on May 8. The DMACC-NENCC loser will meet either third-seeded Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) or sixth-seeded Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in an elimination game at 7 p.m. on May 7.
The double-elimination tournament continues through May 10 with the championship game slated for noon on May 10. A second championship game, if needed, would be played immediately following the first championship game. The Region !! Division II champion will advance to the North Plains District Championship.
