DMACC men's basketball team opens conference play with 98-67 win

Freshman Brent Taylor of Flossmoor, Ill., scored a game-high 18 points and freshmen Malcolm Bragg of Newark, N.J., and Hunter Gawron of Skokie, Ill., tallied 16 and 15 points respectively as the DMACC men's basketball team handed Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) a 98-67 loss December 3 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

With the win, the Bears, ranked ninth in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

The point difference throughout the game allowed DMACC head coach Blake Sandquist to spread playing time with his entire roster. Eleven of the Bears' 14 players saw 13 or more minutes on the court.

DMACC built a 46-29 advantage at halftime and coasted to the win in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 52-38. The Bears shot 47 percent from the field, making 37 of 79 field goal attempts. They were 9-of-29 from three-point range and 15-of-21 from the free throw line.

CCC, led by Merkv Torrance's 17 points, was 27-of-74 from the field for 37 percent. The Raiders drained just five of 25 shots from beyond the arc and were 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Kaden Tate of Pearland, Texas, grabbed nine rebounds and Gawron and freshman Solomon Mosley of Chicago, Ill., had eight apiece as DMACC came away with a 50-33 advantage on the boards. Taylor led the Bears in assists with five and in steals with three.

The DMACC men's basketball team continues ICCAC play against Southwestern Community College (SWCC) Dec. 6 at Creston. The Spartans are 2-6 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
