hoopdirt.com, a website dedicated to college basketball news, jobs and rumors at all levels, in conjunction with Just Play Solutions, has named DMACC men's basketball coach Blake Sandquist the recipient of the Coach of the Week Award. Sandquist was honored for men's junior college basketball.
Sandquist, in his fourth season as the head coach of the DMACC men's basketball program, earned his 100th career victory at DMACC when the Bears defeated Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) 80-64 January 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
Sandquist extended his DMACC coaching record to 101-19 behind an 88-82 win over Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) Jan. 14 at Council Bluffs.
The victories over ILCC and IWCC pushed DMACC's season record to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). The Bears are ranked second in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), marking 33 consecutive weeks that the Bears have been ranked 10th or higher in the poll, dating back two and a half years.
Sandquist became the 14th DMACC men's basketball head coach in July of 2022, joining the Bears after spending 11 seasons as an assistant coach for the William Penn University (WPU) men's basketball program. Sandquist began his coaching career as an undergraduate student manager for head coach John Henry at WPU. He spent one season coaching the junior varsity program before becoming a varsity assistant coach.
Sandquist directed the Bears to a 24-8 record in his first season as head coach, including an 11-5 record in the ICCAC. His 2023-24 team was 31-5, tying a school record, and won the ICCAC championship with a 16-2 record. The Bears advanced to the NJCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship, placing fifth.
DMACC compiled a 29-5 record in 2024-25 and won its second consecutive ICCAC championship at 17-1. The Bears returned to the national championship for a second consecutive season and were eliminated from tournament play after they lost their first two games.
The DMACC men's basketball team puts its No. 2 national ranking and 11-game winning streak on the line Jan. 18 when the Bears face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) at Fort Dodge. The Tritons are 15-3 overall and 7-2 in the ICCAC. They are ranked fifth in this week's NJCAA Division II poll.
