The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) has named DMACC's Kiki Deng the ICCAC Athlete of the Week for Division II Men's Basketball for the week of January 12 to 18.
Deng, a freshman from Des Moines, is being honored by the conference for the second time this season and he is one of three members of the DMACC men's basketball team to be honored this season. Deng was also honored the week of Nov. 24 to 30.
DMACC sophomore Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., was honored the week of Dec. 15 to 21 and freshman Hunter Gawron of Skokie, Ill., was honored the week of Dec. 8 to 14.
Deng scored 59 points in leading the Bears to two wins during the week and both wins came against ranked opponents. Keng scored 33 points as DMACC, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, defeated 11th-ranked Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) 88-82 Jan. 11 at Council Bluffs and he tallied 26 points in an 85-83 win over fifth-ranked Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Jan. 17 at Fort Dodge.
Keng shot 61 percent from the field in the two wins. He was 9-of-13 overall, 2-of-4 from three-point range and 13-of-15 from the free throw line in the win over IWCC and made seven of 13 field goal attempts in the win over ICCC. Deng made three of six three-point attempts in the ICCC win and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Deng's line against IWCC included three rebounds, three assists and a steal and he had seven rebounds, one assist and one steal in the win against ICCC.
Deng has scored 26 or more points in three of DMACC's last four games.
Deng has scored 229 points this season and is averaging 12.1 points a game. He has made 73 of 156 field goal attempts for 47 percent and is 20-of-56 from three-point range for 36 percent. Deng is 63-of-80 from the free throw line for 79 percent.
Deng's season also includes 74 rebounds, 37 assists and 29 steals.
The DMACC men's basketball team is 19-1 overall, 10-0 in the ICCAC and riding a 13-game winning streak. The Bears are home to Southwestern Community College (SWCC) on Jan. 24. SWCC is 7-12 overall and 3-7 in the ICCAC. The Spartans' losses include a 97-67 setback against DMACC Dec. 6 at Creston.
