DMACC men's basketball team tops SWCC for 14th straight win

Freshman Hunter Gawron of Skokie, Ill., led five players in double figures with 17 points as the DMACC men's basketball team ran its winning streak to 14 consecutive games behind a 107-55 win over Southwestern Community College (SWCC) January 24 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

Sophomore Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., had 14 points, sophomore Kaden Tate of Pearland, Texas, and freshman Kiki Deng of Des Moines tallied 12 points apiece and freshman Kavon Phillips of Davenport scored 10 points as the Bears, ranked second in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) improved to 20-1 overall and 11-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC scored the game's first 10 points and put together an 18-2 run in the first six and a half minutes to take control. The Bears were up 51-22 at halftime and led by as many as 55 points in the second half.

 

DMACC shot 59 percent in the win, hitting 37 of 63 field goal attempts. The Bears were 12-of-28 from three-point range and 21-of-32 from the free throw line.

 

SWCC got a team-high 17 points from Frae Wilkins. The Spartans made 21 of 56 field goal attempts for 38 percent. They connected on five of 15 shots from beyond the arc and were 8-of-15 from the free throw line.

 

Tate and freshman Malcolm Bragg of Newark, N.J., pulled down five rebounds apiece as DMACC came away with a 41-29 advantage on the boards. Smith, freshman Brent Taylor of Flossmoor, Ill., and sophomore Johnnie Jones of Milwaukee, Wis., had four rebounds apiece.

 

Freshman Landen Norris of Knoxville led the Bears in assists with six and Smith added five. Tate had a team-high three steals.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will play Central (Neb.) Community College (CCC) Jan. 28 at Columbus, Neb. The Raiders are 9-13 overall and 3-9 in the ICCAC. Their losses include a 98-67 setback against Bears Dec. 3 inside the DMACC gymnasiu
