Smith leads DMACC men's basketball team past WITCC, 86-58

 

Sophomore Rylan Smith of Lincoln, Neb., led four players in double figures with 17 points as the DMACC men's basketball team ran its winning streak to 17 consecutive games behind an 86-58 win over Western Iowa Tech Community College (WITCC) February 4 at Sioux City

 

Freshmen Hunter Gawron of Skokie, Ill., Solomon Mosley of Chicago, Ill., and Brent Taylor of Flossmoor, Ill., added 13, 12 and 11 points respectively as the Bears improved to 23-1 overall and 14-0 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC). Two other DMACC players, freshmen Kavon Phillips of Davenport and Malcolm Bragg of Newark, N.J., barely missed double figures with nine and eight points respectively.

 

WITCC fell to 19-5 and 9-5. The Comets were led by Caleb Kawela's 17 points.

 

The Bears, who hung on for an 81-70 win over WITCC when the two teams played Dec. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium, had little trouble in disposing of the Comets this time around and swept their fourth ICCAC opponent.

 

DMACC led 44-35 at halftime and put the game away by outscoring WITCC. 42-23 in the second half.

 

The Bears shot 53 percent, making 35 of 66 field goal attempts. They were 11-of-25 from three-point range and 5-of-14 from the free throw line.

 

WITCC made 22 of 70 field goal attempts for 31 percent. The Comets connected on seven of 29 shots from three-point range and made seven of 12 free throws.

 

DMACC had a 55-26 advantage on the boards with freshman Kiki Deng of Des Moines leading the way with nine rebounds. Sophomore Kaden Tate of Pearland, Texas, added eight and Gawron collective seven. Phillips and Bragg added six apiece.

 

Smith topped the Bears in assists five and Deng and Phillips came away with four apiece. Tate and Bragg had two steals apiece and Mosley and Tate recorded four and three blocked shots respectively.

 

The DMACC men's basketball team will face Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) Feb. 7 at Estherville. The Lakers are 3-21 overall and 1-13 in the ICCAC. Their losses include an 80-64 decision against DMACC Jan. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium.
