DMACC softball team extends winning streak to six games with doubleheader sweep of NCCC

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team extended its current winning streak to six games with a doubleheader sweep of Neosho County Community College (NCCC) March 19 at Chanute, Kan.


The Bears, ranked fifth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), won by scores of 14-2 and 7-5.


Freshman Dana Dunbar of Chadron, Neb., tossed a four-hitter and freshmen Ally Pickering of Winterset and Maddie Karr of Center Point drove in three runs apiece to pace DMACC in the opener. The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, scored five runs in the second, one in the fourth and put the game away with six runs in the sixth. The game was called because of the mercy rule after NCCC batted in the bottom of the inning.


DMACC collected 17 hits off NCCC pitching, including three by Karr and two each from freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids, Pickering, sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington, freshman Elly Schuemann of Marion and sophomore Kaisha Wells of Topeka, Kan. Lewis, freshman Johanna Diw of Perry and Pickering had doubles in the win and Wells tripled. Wells and freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., drove in two runs apiece.


Dunbar hurled all six innings to come away with the win. She struck out two and walked two.


DMACC used a five-run rally in the first inning to come away with the win in the second game. The Bears led 6-3 after five innings and held NCCC to two runs in the bottom of the seventh to get the win.


Sophomore Ellie Dixon of Iowa City had a pair of base hits and drove in three runs to lead the Bears at the plate. Pickering and Karr also had two hits apiece and Pickering drove in a pair of runs. Dixon, Pickering, Wells, Lewis and Karr had doubles in the win.


Sophomore Peyton Parker of La Porte City pitched the first five innings and got the win. She allowed three runs on five hits, struck out five and walked two. Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic threw two innings, allowing two runs on two hits. She struck out one and walked one.


The DMACC softball team will face Johnson County Community College (JCCC) in a doubleheader today at Overland Park, Kan.
