DMACC softball team splits doubleheader with Johnson County

The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) softball team garnered a split of a doubleheader against Johnson County Community College (JCCC) March 20 at Overland Park, Kan.


The Bears, ranked fifth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 5-1 victory in the opener. JCCC ended the streak with a 6-3 win in the second game.


The split gives DMACC a 13-4 record.


Sophomore Mia Ruther of Burlington had three hits, including a double, and sophomore Avery Guy of Cedar Rapids had a double and a triple and drove in two runs for the Bears in the opener. DMACC opened up a 3-0 lead with single runs in the second, third and fifth innings and closed out the win with a pair of runs in the seventh. JCCC scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth.


Freshman Maddie Karr of Center Point joined Guy with two hits in the win and Ruther and freshman Ally Pickering of Winterset drove in one run apiece.


Freshman Josie Swafford of Wellston, Okla., improved to 5-1 with the win. She allowed one run on two hits, struck out six and walked three.


JCCC scored two runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to get the win in the second game. DMACC opened up a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and scored its other run in the top of the sixth.


Freshman Elly Schuemann of Marion doubled and drove in all three DMACC runs. Freshman Morgan Lewis of Cedar Rapids collected a pair of base hits in the game and Pickering hit a triple.


Sophomore Peyton Parker of La Porte City pitched the first five innings for the Bears and suffered the loss, her third against two victories. She allowed four runs on four hits, struck out five and walked one. Freshman Ally Anderson of Atlantic threw one inning, allowing two runs on two hits. She walked one batter.

The DMACC softball team will face Southeast (Neb.) Community College  (SENEB) in a doubleheader March 24 at the DMACC softball diamond. The first game begins at 1.
