DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheader from Central

 

The DMACC softball team swept its sixth consecutive doubleheader behind 9-1 and 10-3 wins over Central (Neb.) Community College (CNCC) March 30 at Columbus, Neb.

 

Sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale and freshman Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines belted home runs to lead the Bears in the opener and sophomore Erin Ades of Boone hit a home run and drove in three runs for the Bears in the nightcap.

 

Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant improved to 15-2 with the win in the first game and sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater is 4-0 after winning the second game.

 

DMACC, ranked ninth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), improved to 30-7 overall, 13-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) and ran its current winning streak to 13 games.

 

The Bears scored four runs in the top of the third, four in the fourth and one in the sixth in taking the opener. CNCC tallied its lone run in the bottom of the third. The game was called after six innings because of the run rule.

 

Mohler, sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola paced the Bears at the plate with two hits apiece, including a pair of doubles from Blake and one by Neuroth. Tigges, Mohler and Neuroth drove in two runs apiece.

 

Baas went the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts and a walk. Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda threw two innings and struck out all six batters she faced.

 

DMACC had a 2-1 after two innings in the second game and made it a 6-1 game with three runs in the third and one in the fourth. CNCC closed to within 6-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth before the Bears pulled away behind a four-run rally in the sixth. CNCC scored its other run in the bottom of the sixth.

 

Mohler had three hits, including a double, and Tigges and Neuroth came away with two hits apiece. The Bears got doubles from sophomores Macee Reiling of Dallas Center and Jasey Anderson of Estherville and a triple from freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf in addition to Ades' home run. Ades led DMACC in RBIs with three and Mohler and Teerlinck had two apiece.

 

Baumgardner pitched the first six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Grace Herrem of Fall Creek, Wis., threw one inning and struck out one of the three batters she faced.

 

The DMACC softball team will host North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and Northeast Iowa Community College (NEICC) in doubleheaders April 3 and 4 respectively at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

NIACC is 23-12 overall and 8-4 in the ICCAC. The Trojans are ranked 23rd in the NJCAA Division II poll. NEICC is 10-25 overall and 2-10 in the ICCAC.
