DMACC softball team sweeps doubleheaders from Ellsworth, Iowa Lakes and Iowa Central

  • DMACC takes 10-0 and 17-0 decisions from Iowa Lakes CC

The DMACC softball team extended its current winning streak to nine games after sweeping doubleheaders from Ellsworth Community College (ECC), Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) and Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) on April 17, 18th and 19th respectively.

 

The Bears took 3-0 and 19-5 decisions from ECC at Iowa Falls, beat ILCC 10-0 and 17-0 in a pair of five-innings games at the DMACC softball team and handed ICCC 9-2 and 11-10 losses, also at the DMACC softball diamond.

 

With the wins DMACC, ranked 11th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) improved to 43-10 overall and 26-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).

 

DMACC scored all three of its runs in the top of the third in beating ECC in the opener on April 17. Sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and freshmen Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines and Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf paced DMACC at the plate with one double apiece and Teerlinck drove in two of the Bears' three runs.

 

Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda went the distance and earned the win. She allowed five hits, struck out 10 batters and walked one.

 

Neuroth, Mohler and sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale belted home runs in DMACC's win in the second game, which was called after five innings because of the run rule.

 

The Bears led 10-4 after the first inning and put the game away with three runs in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. ECC scored one run in the bottom of the fourth in addition to its four runs in the first inning.

 

Neuroth's home run was one of her three hits in the game and Mohler, sophomore Macee Reiling of Dallas Center and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines had two hits apiece. Extra-base hits in addition to the home runs included two doubles from Reiling and one each by Mohler and Neuroth. Neuroth led the Bears in RBIs with five. Mohler batted in four runs and Tigges and sophomore Erin Ades of Boone each drove in two runs.

 

Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant pitched the first four innings and earned the win. She allowed five runs on five hits and struck out seven batters. Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater went one inning and allowed one hit.

 

Jungers threw a one-hitter, struck out nine and walked two in getting the win in DMACC's victory over ILCC in the opener on April 18. The Bears got the win behind three runs in the second, four in the third and three in the fourth.

 

Richards was one of DMACC's top hitters with two hits, including a home run, and she drove in four runs. Tigges had three doubles and Teerlinck and freshman Luci Weber of Dubuque had two hits apiece. The Bears also got a home run from Mohler and doubles from Reiling and Weber. Teerlinck joined Richards with multiple RBIs with two.

 

DMACC used a 10-run first inning, six runs in the second and one in the fourth in winning the second game.

 

Baas got the win with three hitless innings in the circle. She struck out four and walked one. Baumgardner threw two innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts and a walk.

 

Tigges and Reiling each homered in the win and the Bears got doubles from Mohler, Ades, freshman Bella Louvar of Brandon and sophomore Mo Purdy of Des Moines and a triple from Ades. Tigges and Ades drove in three runs apiece and Reiling, Mohler and Purdy had two RBIs apiece.

 

DMACC scored a run in the third and four each in the fourth and sixth innings in taking the opener against ICCC on April 19. The Tritons tallied both of their runs in the top of the sixth.

 

Neuroth and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola each homered in the win and the Bears got doubles from Weber and Reiling. Ades, Richards and Blake each had two hits and Blake and Ades drove in four and two runs respectively.

 

Jungers pitched all seven innings and earned the win, her 17th against six losses. She allowed two runs on three hits, struck out 11 and walked one.

 

DMACC overcame a 10-5 deficit with six runs in the bottom of the seventh in winning the second game. The Bears led 2-1 after the first inning and 4-1 after scoring twice in the third. ICCC made it a 4-2 game with a run in the top of the fourth but fell behind 5-2 when DMACC scored in the bottom of the fifth. ICCC responded with five runs in the sixth and three in the seventh for its 10-5 lead.

 

Tigges and Blake led the Bears with three hits apiece, including a home run from Tigges, and Neuroth, Reiling, Mohler and Purdy had two hits apiece. Neuroth also homered and Tigges and Blake each doubled with Mohler and Blake getting triples. Blake drove in three DMACC runs and Neuroth, Mohler and Ades had two RBIs apiece.

 

Baas started in the circle for the Bears and went six and two-thirds innings. She allowed nine runs on 11 hits, struck out five and walked four. Baumgardner went a third of an inning and improved to 6-0 with the win. She allowed one run on two hits and struck out one batter.

 

The DMACC softball team will face Northeast (Neb.) Community College (NENCC) April 22 at the DMACC softball diamond. NENCC is 16-37 overall and 9-21 in the ICCAC. DMACC swept a doubleheader from the Hawks March 19 at Norfolk, Neb., winning by scores of 5-2 and 8-6.
