DMACC women's basketball team tops MWCTC in season opener

 

Sophomores Whitney Jensen of Remsen and Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids scored 16 points apiece to lead the DMACC women's basketball team to a 67-60 win over Minnesota West Community and Technical College (MWCTC) November 2 at Worthington, Minn.

 

Sophomore Chloe Costello of Northwood came off the bench to join Jensen and Clayburg in double figures with 14 points.

 

The Bears outscored the Bluejays 27-5 in the opening period for a 22-point lead heading into the second period. There DMACC was outscored 22-11 and held a 38-27 advantage at halftime. The Bears led 55-41 after three quarters.

 

Jensen made seven of 14 field goal attempts, including 1-of-5 from three-point range, and was 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Clayburg made seven of 10 field goal attempts, including 1-of-2 from three-point range, and made her only free throw attempt.

 

DMACC shot 34 percent from the field, making 28 of 82 field goal attempts. The Bears were 6-of-29 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

MWCTC was led by Payton Reimers with a game-high 19 points. The Bluejays also shot 34 percent from the field with 18 field goals from 53 attempts. They made eight of 23 shots from beyond the arc and were 16-of-19 from the free throw line.

 

Jensen and Clayburg led DMACC to a 48-43 advantage in rebounding with nine and eight rebounds respectively. The Bears had 25 offensive rebounds with sophomore Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs getting five offensive rebounds and Jensen and Clayburg coming away with four apiece.

 

Freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly led DMACC in assists with five and Jensen, Costello and freshman Jordan Valley of Waverly had three assists apiece. Jensen, Clayburg and Jordan Valley led the Bears in steals with three apiece.

 

The DMACC women's basketball team will play Black Hawk-Moline Community College (BHMCC) Nov. 4 at Moline, Ill.
