Iowa Western Community College (IWCC) pulled away from a 50-50 tie with six points in the final 38 seconds to hand the DMACC women's basketball team its fifth consecutive loss, 56-52, January 14 at Council Bluffs.
The Bears, ranked 20th in this week's Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), trailed throughout the game and fought back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to gain ties at 48 and 50 in the final minute of the period but IWCC responded with six unanswered points to come away with the win.
The Reivers got a jumper from Kailynne Small for a 52-50 lead with 25 seconds remaining. DMACC freshman Brooklyn Valley of Waverly then missed a three-pointer with 13 seconds to play and IWCC's Grace Albertsen was fouled on the play and made both free throw attempts for a 54-50 lead with 13 seconds to play. Another DMACC miss and subsequent foul sent Sydney Donaldson to the line and she made both attempts for an insurmountable 56-50 lead with two seconds left. The Bears made it a four-point game on a basket at the buzzer by freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf.
Sophomore Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City, Mo., led DMACC with 13 points and Carr added 10. The loss sent DMACC to 13-5 overall and 5-5 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC).
IWCC, which improved to 17-4 and 7-3, got 14 points from Aniyah Howard and 13 by Small. The Reivers led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 42-31 at the end of the third quarter.
DMACC shot 27 percent from the field, making 21 of 77 field goal attempts. The Bears were just 2-of-26 from three-point range and made eight of 16 free throw attempts.
IWCC shot 28 percent, hitting 19 of 68 field goal attempts. The Reivers drained five of 19 shots from beyond the arc and went 13-of-16 from the free throw line.
IWCC had a 51-49 advantage on the boards with Carr's 10 rebounds leading the Bears. Sophomores Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Whitney Jensen of Remsen added seven rebounds apiece and freshman Mariam Omran of Giza, Egypt, had six rebounds.
Sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls topped DMACC in assists with four and Jensen led the Bears in steals with three.
The DMACC women's basketball team will face Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) Jan. 17 at Fort Dodge. The Tritons are 13-5 overall and 6-4 in the ICCAC.
