Loss to Pima ends season for DMACC women's basketball team

Fourth-seeded Pima Community College (PCC) got 26 points and nine rebounds, including five offensive boards, from Kiley Sours-Miller in handing the DMACC women's basketball team a 71-64 loss on the second day of the 2026 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Women's Basketball Championship at Hickory, N.C.

DMACC, seeded 13th, got 13 and 10 points respectively from sophomores Breeley Clayburg of Coon Rapids and Chloe Costello of Northwood in seeing its season end with a 26-9 record.

Poor shooting and rebounding doomed the Bears. They shot just 32 percent from the field, hitting 20 of 63 field attempts, including 5-of-22 from three-point range. DMACC shot well from the charity stripe, making 19 of 21 attempts.

PCC was 38-of-73 from the field for 38 percent. The Aztecs made just two of 13 attempts from beyond the arc and were 13-of-19 at the free throw line.

PCC had a decided advantage on the boards with 50 rebounds to DMACC's 29. The Aztecs' 50 rebounds included 13 offensive rebounds and the Bears collected just seven. The Aztecs scored 13 second-chance points and 17 points off 15 DMACC turnovers. The Bears did not have any second-chance points and scored eight points off 14 PCC turnovers.

DMACC kept it close early, leading 9-4 with the game just more than three minutes old. PCC closed to within 11-10 on a basket by Nevaeh Urenda with 2 minutes, 17 seconds left in the quarter and then took a 12-11 lead on Reigne Waugh's jumper with 1:06 remaining. DMACC had to play catchup the rest of the way.

The Bears trailed 14-13 at the end of the quarter and a 9-2 run in the first 2:17 of the second period got PCC a 23-15 advantage. The Aztecs had a 27-17 lead with 6:13 to play in the half before an 11-5 run got the Bears within four, 32-28, at halftime. Clayburg scored seven of DMACC's 11 points and sophomore Whitney Jensen of Remsen and freshman Alivia Carr of Bettendorf added two points apiece.

The Bears kept PCC's lead to less than 10 points throughout the third period before a 7-1 run gave the Aztecs a 56-42 advantage heading into the final quarter. They led by as many as 15 points twice in that final period and DMACC made it respectable on a three-point basket by freshman Jordan Valley with 22 seconds left.

Jensen narrowly missed double figures with eight points and Carr and sophomore Missy Evezic of Council Bluffs had seven points apiece. Valley finished with six points on a pair of three-point baskets.

Evezic led DMACC in rebounding with seven rebounds and Carr added six. Jensen finished with four boards and Clayburg, Costello, Valley, sophomore Aunasia Dunn of Kansas City and freshman Mariam Omran of Giza, Egypt, had three apiece. Dunn dished out three assists and Valley, Costello and Carr had two steals apiece.

Lucy Fisher and Melicia Nelson joined Sours-Miller with nine rebounds for PCC, including five offensive boards from Nelson.

DMACC's 26-9 season included 13 consecutive wins at the start. The Bears then lost six consecutive games before putting together a six-game winning streak and they had a five-game winning streak ended by PCC.

DMACC finished fifth in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) standings, then defeated Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) and fifth-ranked Kirkwood Community College (KCC) to win the Region 11-A championship. The KCC win sent the Bears to the North Central Plains District championship game against United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) which they defeated 86-71 to advance to the national championship for the first time in school history. DMACC defeated Monroe County Community College (MCCC) in its tournament opener, 62-47, before being eliminated with the loss to PCC.

DMACC is currently ranked 24th in the NJCAA Division II poll.
