The Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) volleyball team hosted the DMACC Invitational October 5 and 6 inside the DMACC gymnasium and came away with a 2-2 record.
The Bears, ranked 19th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, dropped a 3-1 decision to second-ranked Parkland College (PC) in their tournament opener on Oct. 5 and handed Neosho County Community College (NCCC) a 3-2 loss in their second match of the day. On Oct. 6, DMACC defeated Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC), 3-1, and then lost to Highland (Kan.) Community College (HCC) in the final match of the tournament, 3-2.
The split gives DMACC an 18-9 record for the season.
The Bears got 20 kills from sophomore Peyton Parker of La Porte City and 10 by freshman Amber Dilsaver of Fort Madison in a 19-25, 25-21, 14-25, 22-25 loss to PC. Sophomore Madison Paulsen of Council Bluffs added eight kills as DMACC hit .127 in the loss. The Bears came away with 45 kills from 142 attacks with 27 hitting errors.
Sophomore Gill Tupper of Nevada had 39 assists in the match and freshman Keimoney Lang of Iowa City led four players in double figures in digs with 21. Freshman Daiton Martin of Essex had 15 digs, Paulsen finished with 13 and Tupper had 11. Paulsen and Dilsaver led the Bears in blocks with three apiece.
Parker's 18 kills and 16 apiece from Paulsen and Dilsaver lifted DMACC to a 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 16-14 win over NCCC. Freshman Kyra Ikeda of Fairfax contributed nine kills as the Bears hit .235 in the win, getting 67 kills from 162 attacks with 29 hitting errors.
Tupper had 56 assists and Martin finished with three ace serves. Lang led DMACC in digs with 29, Martin added 21, Tupper and Paulsen came away with 18 apiece and freshman Carissa Smith of Monmouth, Ill., had 14. Dilsaver had five blocks, including two block assists, and Paulsen finished with three blocks, including two block assists.
DMACC defeated RCTC by set scores of 25-11, 25-21, 23-25, 25-18 behind 22 kills from Paulsen. Parker and Dilsaver finished with nine kills apiece as the Bears hit .264 in the win, getting 56 kills from 129 attacks with 22 hitting errors.
Tupper again led DMACC in assists with 42 and also had four ace serves with Martin getting three. Lang topped the Bears in digs with 22, Paulsen had 20 and Tupper, Martin and Smith came away with 15, 13 and 10 respectively. Dilsaver led DMACC in blocks with four, including two block assists.
DMACC got 16 kills each from Paulsen and Parker and 15 by Dilsaver in a 17-25, 25-18, 26-24, 19-25, 13-15 loss to HCC. Sophomore Lacey Clark of Bettendorf finished with eight kills, Tupper had seven and freshman Darian Gray of Mechanicsville added five as the Bears hit .229 in the loss. They had 70 kills from 129 attacks with 29 hitting errors.
Tupper topped DMACC in assists with 51 and Paulsen led five players in double figures in digs with 30. Lang came away with 27 digs, Martin had 23, Smith 14 and Parker finished with 10. Dilsaver had five blocks, including four block assists, and Paulsen had three blocks, including two block assists.
The DMACC volleyball team will host Southeastern Community College (SECC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) matchup Oct. 10 inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Bears are 4-2 in league play and SECC is 16-12 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
