DMACC baseball team takes doubleheader from NEICC

Freshman Drew Owen of Alleman had eight runs batted in and sophomore Brock Moore of Urbandale and freshman Jacob Luster of Huxley drove in four runs apiece as the DMACC baseball team swept a doubleheader from Northeast (Iowa) Community College (NEICC) April 5 at the DMACC baseball diamond.

Owen and Moore drove in four runs apiece in DMACC's 12-2 win in the first game and Owen and Luster each had four RBIs in a 19-8 win in the second game.

Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City earned the decision in the opener to improve to 2-2 for the season and sophomore Gage Miller of Mandan, N.D., improved to 2-3 for the season with the win in the second game.

DMACC improved to 16-17 overall and 4-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with the wins.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader on April 3 and a single game on April 4 but because of inclement weather the doubleheader was moved to April 5 and the three-game series will conclude with a single game today.

Moore blasted a pair of home runs and Owen had three hits, including a double, in the Bears' win in the opener, which was called after five innings because of the run rule. DMACC took a 3-0 lead in the first and led 5-0 after scoring twice in the second inning. NEICC made it a 5-1 game with a run in the top of the third and DMACC closed out the win with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. NEICC, which fell to 3-25 overall and 0-8 in the ICCAC, tallied its other run in the top of the fourth.

Owen led the Bears at the plate with three hits, including a triple, and sophomores Cole Baumgart of Clarinda, Austin Anderson of Marion and Trey Franck of Marion joined Moore with two hits apiece in the win, including a home run from Anderson and a double and a triple from Franck. Anderson also drove in a pair of runs.

Owen got his four RBIs on a run-scoring triple in the first, an RBI single in the second inning and a two-run single in the third. Moore hit a two-run homer in the first, a solo home run in the second and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third.

Redshirt freshman Hunter Cook of Polk City went the distance and improved to 2-2 with the win. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked one.

DMACC took a 5-0 lead in the second inning of the second game and pulled away from a 5-3 advantage with ten runs in the bottom of the third to come away with the win. NEICC made it a 15-5 game with two runs in the fifth and DMACC pushed its advantage to 19-5 with four runs in the bottom of the inning. NEICC scored its sixth run in the top of the sixth and added to runs in the top of the seventh.

Luster paced the Bears at the plate with four hits, including a pair of doubles, and Moore and sophomore Adam Leininger of Fargo, N.D., had two RBIs apiece.

Owen's four RBIs came on a three-run double in the first and bases loaded walk in the third. All four of Luster's RBIs came in the third inning, two on a bases loaded single and two on a double.

Miller pitched the first four innings, allowing three runs on two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore Rhett Pleggenkuhle of Van Meter went a third of an inning and gave up two runs. He walked two batters and struck out one. Freshman Vincent Clawson of Rhodes went two-thirds of an inning, striking out one batter and walking two and sophomore Zach Turpin of Waukee gave up three runs on five hits and a walk in one inning on the mound. Redshirt freshman Jack Bunnell of Eddyville also threw one inning, getting a double play grounder from the first batter he faced and striking out the second batter.
