Freshman Brooklyn Teerlinck of Bettendorf and sophomore Macee Reiling of Dallas Center combined for seven runs batted in as the DMACC softball team swept a doubleheader from Northeast (Iowa) Community College (NEICC) April 7 at Ankeny.
Teerlinck had three hits, including a triple, and drove in four runs in a 17-8 win in the opener and Reiling had two hits, including a double, and drove in three runs in a 10-2 victory in the second game. The first game was called after six innings because of the run rule.
The Bears improved to 34-7 overall and 17-1 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) with the wins and ran their winning streak to 17 games. NEICC fell to 16-18 and 6-12.
DMACC, ranked eighth in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, used seven runs in the top of the first, one in the second, one in the fourth and eight in the sixth in winning the opener. The Bears collected 19 hits in the win, including two each from Reiling, freshman Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines and sophomores Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., Bri Tigges of Urbandale and Jasey Anderson of Estherville.
Extra-base hits included a home run from Anderson and doubles by Mohler, Tigges and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola. Reiling, Mohler, Gregory, Tigges and Anderson each drove in two runs.
Sophomore Brooklyn Baumgardner of Slater pitched the first four innings and stayed unbeaten at 5-0 with the win. She allowed seven runs on eight hits and struck out three batters. Sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda pitched two innings, allowing one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
NEICC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the second game but a 10-run rally in the last three innings got DMACC the win. The Bears scored one run in the fifth, seven in the sixth and two in the seventh.
Tigges, Mohler, sophomore Erin Ades of Boone and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines joined Reiling with two hits apiece, including doubles by Tigges, Teerlinck and sophomore Mo Purdy of Des Moines. Mohler also drove in a pair of runs.
Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant improved to 17-2 with the win. She went all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
The DMACC softball team will host Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in a doubleheader today at the DMACC softball diamond. The Eagles, who lead the NJCAA Division II poll, are 37-5 overall and 17-1 in the ICCAC with a 14-game winning streak. The two teams split a doubleheader March 21 at Cedar Rapids. KCC took the opener, 8-3, and DMACC won the nightcap, 10-9, a win that began the Bears' 17-game winning streak.
