The DMACC softball team improved to 37-10 overall and 20-4 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) after winning three of four games against North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) and Northeast (Iowa) Community College (NEICC) April 10 and 13 respectively.
The Bears split a doubleheader against NIACC April 10 at Mason City, losing the opener, 1-0, and taking the nightcap, 12-1. They won both ends of a doubleheader against NEICC April 13 at the DMACC softball diamond, 11-0 on a no-hitter from sophomore Kierra Jungers of Fonda in the opener and 8-0 in the second game.
Both games against NEICC were called after five innings because of the run rule.
NIACC's Chloe Thurlby tossed a one-hitter and struck out 10 in the Trojans' win in the first game on April 10. Sophomore Erin Ades of Boone accounted for the lone DMACC hit with a single. NIACC scored the game's only run in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore Jacki Baas of Bondurant took the loss. She pitched six innings, allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Ades and sophomore Bri Tigges of Urbandale each homered and sophomore Baylor Gregory of Papillion, Neb., doubled and drove in three runs as DMACC took the second game, 12-1.
The Bears, ranked eighth in the Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), took a 4-0 lead in the fourth, scored twice in the fifth and put the game away with six runs in the seventh. NIACC tallied its lone run in the bottom of the fifth.
Gregory, Ades and freshman Dana Blake of Indianola led DMACC with two hits apiece and other extra-base hits included doubles from sophomore Morgan Neuroth of LeGrand and freshman Mackenzie Mohler of West Des Moines. Neuroth, Ades and Blake drove in two runs apiece.
Jungers allowed three hits and struck out 14 in coming away with the win, her 13th against six losses.
Jungers' no-hitter in the opener against NEICC, pushed her record to 14-6. She struck out 10 of the 16 batters she face.
Tigges, Mohler and Blake drove in two runs apiece in leading the Bears to the win. They scored seven runs in the second, one in the third and three in the eighth.
Mohler and freshman Cali Richards of Des Moines had two hits apiece and Mohler and sophomore Macee Reiling of Dallas Center each doubled.
Two home runs each from Neuroth and Tigges and one by Reiling led the Bears to their 8-0 win in the second game. They took a 1-0 lead in the first, scored five runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Richards led DMACC with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Neuroth, Tigges, Reiling and Ades had two hits apiece. Gregory added a double to the DMACC attack and Neuroth and Tigges drove in two runs apiece.
Baas stands at 18-4 after coming away with the win. She allowed two hits, struck out seven and walked two.
The DMACC softball team will face Ellsworth Community College (ECC) in a doubleheader April 15 at Iowa Falls. ECC is 19-26 overall and 5-18 in the ICCAC. The Panthers' losses included 10-1 and 15-2 decisions against DMACC March at the DMACC softball diamond.
