The DMACC volleyball team came away with a pair of wins in the Yellowjacket Invitational September 10 at Rochester, Minn.
Covid-19 freshman (CoFR) Kylie Welch of Davenport had 16 kills and freshman Anna Niehaus of Carroll finished with 14 as the Bears recorded a 3-2 win over Rock Valley Community College (RVCC) in their tournament opener. CoFR Abby Allmon of Norwalk had nine kills in a 3-0 win over Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) in DMACC's second and final match of the tournament.
DMACC, which has won three of its last four matches, came into the tournament ranked 11th in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll. RVC is the top-ranked team in NJCAA Division III and RCTC is ranked fourth in Division III.
DMACC defeated RVC by sets scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25 15-13. Welch hit .433 in getting her 16 kills with those kills coming from 30 attacks with three hitting errors. Niehaus hit .294 with her 14 kills coming from 34 attacks with four hitting errors. As a team, DMACC hit. 246 with 51 kills from 142 attacks and 16 hitting errors.
CoFR Sara Hansen of Hudson and CoFR Morgan Tupper of Nevada finished with 19 and 15 assists respectively and CoFR Alissa Weinkoetz of Afton had a pair of ace serves. CoFR Rachel Eddy of Dubuque came away with 15 digs and Welch had 13. CoFR Abigail Maue of Walker led DMACC in blocks with six block assists. Welch had four block assists and Weinkoetz finished with four blocks, including three block assists.
Allmon's nine kills, seven from Welch and Niehaus and five by Weinkoetz lifted the Bears to a 25-14, 25-18, 25-22 win over RCTC. DMACC hit .189 in the win with 33 kills from 106 attacks and 13 hitting errors.
Hansen led the Bears in assists with 15 and CoFR Elizabeth Pierce of Norwalk added seven. Hansen also had three ace serves with Eddy and Pierce getting two apiece. Eddy led four players in double figures in digs with 15 and Welch and Hansen added 13 and 12 respectively. Weinkoetz came away with four block assists, Allmon also had four blocks, including three block assists, and Maue and CoFR Karlee Timm of Victor had two blocks apiece.
The DMACC volleyball team will play Kirkwood on Wednesday. Match time is 7:00 p. m. inside the DMACC gymnasium. The Eages are eighth in the latest polls, with a record of 12-5 and 2-0 in ICCAC play.
