DMACC volleyball team falls to Kirkwood CC in Region 11-B championship match

 

Freshman Ramsey Johnston of Chaska, Minn., had 11 kills and 15 assists as the DMACC volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Kirkwood Community College (KCC) in the Region 11-B championship Match Nov. 5 at Cedar Rapids.

 

KCC, ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II poll, improved to 32-2 for the season with a 25-14, 25-27, 25-17, 25-15 decision against the No. 17 Bears. DMACC, which saw a five-match winning streak end, fell to 25-14 with the loss.

 

Johnston hit .265 with her 11 kills coming from 34 attacks with two hitting errors. Sophomore Reagan Weeler of Cedar Falls added 10 kills for DMACC. The Bears hit .151 in the loss, getting 39 kills from 152 attacks with 16 hitting errors.

 

Sophomore Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown added 13 assists to the DMACC attack and sophomore Danica Wrage of Waterloo had three ace serves.

 

Sophomore Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls led five DMACC players in double figures in digs with 31. Sandvold finished with 15, freshman Kathryn Lukkarinen of Macomb, Ill., had 14, freshman Indy Johnson of Clarion came away with 11 and Johnston finished with 10.

 

Wrage led the Bears in blocks with five, including four block assists. Freshman Alli Sheldahl of Hubbard had three block assists.

 

KCC's win sends the Eagles to the North Central District Championship where they will face North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) with the winner advancing to the 2025 NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Nov. 19 to 22 at Cedar Rapids.

 

Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), the Iowa Community College Athletic Association (ICCAC) regular season champion, won the Region 11-A championship and advances to the 2025 NJCAA Division II Volleyball Championship for the sixth consecutive season.

 

The national tournament field will include four at-large teams and the DMACC volleyball team is among those teams being considered for an at-large bid. The tournament field and seedings will be announced on Nov. 12.
