Bears repeat as Region 11 Champions

  • Five DMACC runners finish in the top six

 

Sophomore Ava Manning of Des Moines took medalist honors with a time of 19 minutes, 16 seconds over the 5K course and led the DMACC women's cross country team to the team championship in the Region 11 Championships October 24 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

 

The Bears, who had five runners among the top six finishers, scored 19 points and finished 31 points ahead of runner-up Southeastern Community College (SECC). North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) finished third with 61 points.

 

Other DMACC runners finishing in the top 10 included sophomore Jaycie Vohs of Galva, freshman Mariah Falkena of Dunlap, freshman Lillyona Abernathy of Iowa City and sophomore Dakota Tromblay of Ogden.

 

Vohs finished third in 20:06, Falkena placed fourth in 20:14, Abernathy was fifth with a time of 20:23 and Tromblay crossed the finish line in sixth place with a time of 20:30.

 

DMACC freshman Cece Thompson of Clive also ran in the meet and finished 12th. Her time was 21:45.

 

The DMACC women's cross country team, ranked fourth in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) behind Mesa (Ariz.) Community College (MCC), Paradise Valley (Ariz.) Community College (PVCC) and Wallace State-Hanceville (Ala.) Community College (WSHCC), will run in the 2025 NJCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Championship Nov. 8 at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

 

DMACC finished third behind MCC and PVCC in the 2024 national championship.
