DMACC volleyball team splits two matches in DMACC Invitational

The DMACC volleyball team stands at 13-8 for the season after splitting a pair of matches in the DMACC Invitational Sept. 27 inside the DMACC gymnasium.

 

The Bears, ranked 13th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), dropped a 3-2 decision to No. 17 Neosho County Community College (NCCC) in their tournament opener, then rounded with a 3-0 win over East Central College (ECC) in their second and final match of the tournament.

 

DMACC got 12 kills from sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Rapids and 10 by sophomore Emma Liechti of Ankeny in a 14-25, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24, 15-8 loss to NCCC. Wheeler hit . 209 with her 12 kills coming from 43 attacks with three hitting errors and Liechti hit .500, getting her 10 kills from 18 attacks with one hitting error.

 

Freshman Brooklyn Lyftogt of Van Meter came away with eight kills for DMACC and freshmen Ramsey Johnston of Chaska, Minn., and Kathryn Lukkarinen of Macomb, Ill., had seven apiece. DMACC hit .194 in the loss, getting 52 kills from 170 attacks with 19 hitting errors.

 

Johnston and sophomore Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown led the Bears in assists with 25 and 21 respectively and both contributed three ace serves. Sophomore Danica Wrage of Waterloo came away with two ace serves.

 

Lukkarinen and sophomore Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls led DMACC in digs with 25 apiece and freshman Indy Johnson of Clarion and Anderson had 18 and 11 respectively. Wrage led the Bears in blocks with seven, including six block assists.

 

Wheeler had 11 kills, Lyftogt added 10 and Johnston and Wrage finished with nine and seven respectively in the Bears' 25-20, 25-12, 25-18 win over ECC. Wheeler hit .267 with her 11 kills coming from 30 attacks with three hitting errors. Lyftogt hit .588 with her 10 kills coming from 17 attacks and no hitting errors.

 

DMACC hit .298 in the win with 48 kills from 121 attacks and 12 hitting errors.

 

Johnston led the Bears in assists with 20 and added 14 digs. Sandvold came away with 25 digs and Johnson added 11. Liechti led DMACC in blocks with six block assists.

 

The DMACC volleyball team will face ninth-ranked Iowa Central Community College (ICCC) in an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference matchup Sept. 30 at Fort Dodge. The Bears are 4-1 in ICCAC play. ICCC is 18-6 overall and 6-0 in the ICCAC.
