DMACC volleyball team goes 1-3 in Iowa Central Tournament

  • DMACC faces Iowa Lakes Community College on October 21

 

The DMACC volleyball team slipped to 1-3 for the season after losing three of four matches in the Iowa Central Tournament Oct. 17 and 18 at Fort Dodge.

 

The Bears, ranked 15th in the most recent Division II poll from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA), picked up a 3-1 win against Metropolitan Community College (MCC) in their second match on Oct. 17 and their three losses came against NJCAA Division II ranked teams. Twentieth-ranked Northeast Oklahoma A&M College (NEOAM) took a 3-0 win from DMACC on Oct. 17 and No. 3 Cowley County Community College (CCCC) and No. 5 Kansas City (Kan.) Community College (KCKCC) defeated DMACC 3-1 and 3-0 respectively in matches on Oct. 18.

 

Freshman Ramsey Johnston of Chaska, Minn., had nine kills and sophomore Danica Wrage of Waterloo added seven as NEOAM handed the Bears a 25-18, 25-15, 25-20 loss in the Bears' tournament opener. Johnston hit .429 with her nine kills coming from 21 attacks with no hitting errors. As a team, DMACC hit .165, getting 31 kills from 115 attacks with 12 hitting errors.

 

Johnston also led the Bears in assists with 14 and sophomore Lauren Sandvold of Cedar Falls contributed five ace serves. Sandvold, sophomore Sydney Anderson of Marshalltown and Johnston came away with 23, 13 and nine digs respectively. Sophomore Emma Liechti of Ankeny led DMACC in blocks with two block assists.

 

Johnston's 16 kills, 11 from Liechti and 10 by sophomore Reagan Wheeler of Cedar Falls lifted the Bears to a 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15 win over MCC. Johnston hit .317 in the win, Wheeler hit .250 and Liechti hit .417 helping the Bears to a .288 hitting percentage in the win. They had 53 kills from 146 attacks with 11 hitting errors.

 

Anderson contributed a team-high 27 assists and had three ace serves and Johnston added 16 assists. Sandvold, sophomore Riley Starkey of Rockford, Ill., and freshman Indy Johnson of Clarion had two ace serves apiece.

 

Sandvold led four players in double figures in digs with 26 and Johnson, Anderson and Johnston added 16, 13 and 12 respectively. Johnson, Wrage and Liechti had three block assists.

 

Johnston and Wheeler topped DMACC in kills with eight apiece as the Bears dropped a 19-25, 15-25, 25-19, 17-25 decision to CCCC. The Bears hit .224 in the loss with 30 kills from 107 attacks with six hitting errors.

 

Freshman Saige De Jong of Pella led DMACC in assists with 11 and Johnston added nine. Wrage, Sandvold and De Jong had two ace serves apiece and Sandvold topped the Bears in digs with 16. Wrage came away with five block assists, Johnston had four and Liechti and freshman Alli Sheldahl of Hubbard had four blocks apiece with each getting three block assists.

 

Six kills apiece from Johnston and Wheeler were the best DMACC could do in a 25-23, 25-13, 25-20 loss to KCKCC. The Bears hit .139 with 20 kills from 79 attacks with nine hitting errors.

 

Anderson had team-high 10 assists and she, Johnston and Wrage contributed two ace serves apiece. Sandvold led the Bears in digs with 11 and Liechti came away with six block assists. Johnston and Wheeler added three block assists apiece.

 

The DMACC volleyball team, 6-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC), faces Iowa Lakes Community College (ILCC) in a conference matchup Oct. 21 at Estherville. ILCC is 10-19 overall and 3-6 in the ICCAC.
